Conservative gun owners scream like chastised children whenever the issue of gun control comes up. I don’t think that this means taking away the registered weapons of non-criminals, which is what these bandwagon jumpers seem to think. Perhaps there are some that mean to take away guns, but it is not what I believe. However, I do feel that there should be gun control laws put into place to protect citizens. Let’s be real. Owning a gun does not make you any less likely to be killed than a person who does not own a gun. If anything, you won’t get to that gun in time, or the criminal will get it away from you, or something else will happen, and then you could wind up murdered anyway.
According to a study published online that was conducted by The American Journal of Medicine, we Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by a firearm than people in other developed countries such as Japan, Austria, and New Zealand. Americans ages 15 – 24 are nearly 50 times more likely to be the victims of a firearm, while those ages 25 – 34 are 32 times more likely to be killed by gunshot. This is not to say that guns kill people because we know that it is those that operate the firearms doing the killing, but if these individuals had no access to guns, there would be far less shootings.
The USA accounted for 90% of all women murdered by gun-wielding killers. and more than two-thirds of homicides in this country are deaths by firearms. Americans are 7 times more likely than their peers in high-income nations to be the victims of violence, and 6 times more likely to die from an accidental shooting. Yes, I understand that there are more than 300 million people in this nation and that the culture here is far different than that of Slovakia, Norway, Belgium, or even the United Kingdom. Yet when you look at the rate per 100,000 people, it is still quite high for a country that is supposedly ‘developed‘.
Conservatives will shout that these statistics are simply not comparable but they are only seeing what they want to. The truth of the matter is, America has a problem with gun violence and it is not just restricted to drug dealers, thieves, sociopaths, and other criminals. There was a double murder in my city a few years back that happened in an upscale, gated community – simply because the perp wanted to know how it felt to commit murder! More recently, a triple shooting occurred that left 2 people dead. One reads or hears about police shooting an unarmed civilian nearly every day. And we do not need to make changes to our gun laws in this country? What the hell are you people thinking anyway?!?
Gun violence is a concern here that should be addressed by our nation’s leaders. Ignoring the problem and catering to the NRA and other gun lobbyists will not make the issue go away.
